Dropping the Bomb

For a history buff like myself, this sort of thing is just too cool -

HONOLULU, Hawaii (AP) -- The wreckage of a large World War II-era Japanese submarine has been found by researchers in waters off Hawaii.

Now I know that there's still a pretty lively debate amongst folks who think dropping the bomb on Japan was overkill.   Being the war realist that I am, I've never really bought the argument and as you could probably imagine, I whole-heartedly believe Truman made the right choice.  On this note, the article gives us yet another little datapoint for why you've sometimes gotta do something nasty to prevent something even nastier -

An I-400 and I-401 were captured at sea a week after the Japanese surrendered in 1945. Their mission -- which was never completed -- reportedly was to use the aircraft to drop rats and insects infected with bubonic plague, cholera, typhus and other diseases on U.S. cities.

When the bacteriological bombs could not be prepared in time, the mission was reportedly changed to bomb the Panama Canal.

War.   It's a dirty thing.
